You are so dead on regarding the Novak story. It is indeed sad that society thrives on the pain of others. It certainly seems to make for good entertainment at least.
Emotions, particularly love, are a motivator of immense proportions that compel people to do all sorts of crazy things. One can only hope that those things never get picked up by the mass media.
